Deep Research vs. Fast Thinking: the mid-market AI portfolio

One winner is the wrong design question

Mid-market companies are often pushed toward a single enterprise AI answer. That simplifies the vendor story, but it does not reflect how work happens. Some decisions demand source-heavy analysis, multi-step synthesis, and expert review. Others demand fast drafting, meeting support, service assistance, or in-workflow automation. The controls, latency, evidence, and user experience are different.

A defensible four-layer portfolio

Begin with a governed generalist for broad knowledge work where permissions, retention, and human review are understood. Add a suite-native speed layer when it reduces friction inside a system employees already use. Introduce a knowledge layer only when permission-clean internal content and retrieval quality justify another platform. Use specialists where a measurable workflow, distinctive data, or regulatory requirement earns the additional complexity.

The anti-shelfware rule

Every additional layer must earn its place through a named workflow, accountable owner, control posture, adoption plan, and measurable outcome. If two products serve the same workflow with similar evidence, concentration and supportability usually matter more than marginal feature differences.

The mid-market advantage is not having fewer ambitions. It is making fewer unsupported platform commitments and learning faster from controlled production work.
