Google's AI research notebook that answers questions only from the files you upload and links every answer to its source.
Current-name note: Active/retained — fixed catalog identity preserved for the 2026 public-web research run.
NotebookLM is an AI research notebook from Google; in mid-2026 Google began calling it Gemini Notebook, though many people still say NotebookLM. A user uploads documents, web links, or audio, then asks questions about them. The tool answers only from those uploaded sources and links each answer to a source. It can turn your sources into an audio overview that sounds like a podcast, or build a video overview, a mind map, flashcards, or a quiz, and a newer Deep Research mode digs through many sources at once. The free plan allows 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook; paid tiers come bundled into Google's AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra plans.
This fits a team drowning in long reports, transcripts, or policy documents, such as a research, legal, or strategy group that can start by loading its own files into one notebook. The free tier covers light use, since it already allows 100 notebooks. Heavier users can move to a paid plan: Google's AI Plus costs about 5 dollars a month and Pro about 20 dollars a month, but confirm these figures directly with Google, since bundling and pricing have changed more than once. Two things to watch: the recent rename to Gemini Notebook can confuse staff searching for help articles, and answers are only as good as the sources you feed in. It is not built for company-wide governance or audit logging like a true enterprise tool.

Estimate assumptions: This scenario uses a category-based allowance, not a verified price for this product. Based on 20 enabled users. Confirm the vendor’s billing unit and current price or quote before budgeting.
Benefits have not been estimated: The current research does not estimate potential savings, return on investment, or how long it would take to recover the cost. Earlier benefit estimates are excluded.
Confirm current product identity, commercial packaging, data processing terms, sign-in and access rules, retention, integrations, support model, implementation effort, and rollback conditions.
Verify identity, package, availability, ownership, pricing, and security evidence before approving a pilot
Do not approve a pilot yet. Verify the current product identity, package, availability, owner, pricing, and security evidence; then define one workflow, a baseline, and rollback criteria.
Define what success looks like for a test of Google Gemini Notebook (formerly NotebookLM) and assign someone to lead it.
Once the requirements above are met, compare a small trial with how your team works today.
Track adoption, output quality, business results, and actual costs against the estimate.
Use the results to decide whether to stop, adjust, or expand the pilot.
Confirm encryption, how the vendor uses your data, customer data separation, how long data stays and how to delete it, activity records, sign-in and user setup, where data is handled, other companies that process data, past incidents, and what your team must manage.
Review before rollout: confirm how to export your data, revoke access, and return to your existing workflow. Assign an owner and test the rollback plan before expanding use.
